Two-thirds of the groups said they planned to maintain current programs without adding staff members or providing pay increases, while one-third said they were conducting restructuring and strategic planning with hopes that they could add programs and jobs in the year ahead.

Guest commentary: Even as economy improves, nonprofits will feel the pinch | Detroit Free Press | freep.com: Even as Michigan's economy picks up in 2012, nonprofits in metro Detroit shouldn't expect things to go back to normal. For some, the end of the state tax credit for certain charitable gifts is likely to be a hardship. For others, the problem will be that some corporate donors may still hold back.
All, however, will be challenged by a fund-raising environment that has grown steadily tougher and more competitive over the past few years

Now, two years later and with 12 additional theater companies in the area, a recent follow-up story provides an update on these theaters, all still in operation, and offers a list of four tips for small arts organizations navigating similarly challenging courses:"

Shrinking budgets forcing teams to be creative with postseason trips | Varsity Extra: High School Sports | Idaho Statesman: "But as Idaho’s school districts deal with budget cuts from the state legislature and mixed results in local levy elections, it’s possible for some officials to see a time when a qualifying team wouldn’t participate at state championship events.
“I could foresee a team at some point saying we’re not going to state because we can’t afford it,” Capital athletic director Steve Sosnowski said."

Our View: Charities thrive on optimism, generosity Editorials The Free Press, Mankato, MN: "t should be no surprise that the recession has brought a drop in charitable giving.
The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported this week that charitable donations in the United States went down 11 percent in 2009, the biggest drop in 20 years.
Against that backdrop, it is heartwarming to see some local charities optimistically forging ahead with major fund drives to expand and enhance their services."

The Nonprofit Quarterly | @npquarterly | Nonprofit Newswire | Recession Worsening Decline in Religious Giving: "As the New York Times reports, 'Well before the subprime mortgage crisis threw the economy into a tailspin, warning signs for religious giving were present. A 2007 study by three professors at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis found that baby boomers in 2000 were donating about 10 percent less to religious bodies than their parents’ generation did at a comparable age in 1973—and almost 25 percent less than those parents, by then ages 62 to 76, were donating in 2000.'"

Editorial: United Way shifts with the times : News-Record.com : Greensboro & the Triad's most trusted source for local news and analysis: "As the world changed around it, so did United Way of Greater Greensboro.
Good thing, too. The economy remains uncertain. Corporate giving isn’t what it used to be. So United Way is expanding appeals to small businesses and largely untapped young donors. The idea: If more people give even a little, the campaign can close the gap that a few corporate captains once filled with well-placed checks."

This is the state of the Memphis-area nonprofit community. What's worse is that Nancy McGee, CEO of the Memphis-based Alliance for Nonprofit Excellence, can't yet tell if this is the 'new normal.'"

Golf With Clinton, $100,000 Watches Show Galas Scene Brightens - BusinessWeek: "Parrish Museum Director Terrie Sultan noticed the improved fundraising climate at the nonprofit’s Spring Fling event in April, a cocktail party that also matched $84,000 raised last year instead of taking a hit.
“I started to feel that there was a lot more philanthropic energy around that event, and we met our goal,” Sultan said in a phone interview. “I saw a lot of enthusiasm I hadn’t seen in a while.”"

DON'T DROP THE BALL ON THE ANNUAL BALL - Association Bisnow - Washington
DON'T DROP THE BALL ON THE ANNUAL BALL - Association Bisnow - Washington: "Of course, there's an acronym for evaluating events: SMART. Gloria suggests first asking whether the event has a specific purpose, such as generating publicity, raising visibility, or bringing in new donors. Then, consider how you might define success and measure it. (Did media show up? Did donors increase their gifts?) Don't forget some sort of cost/benefit analysis to determine if those goals are achievable or realistic. 'You don't want to put yourself in hole,' Gloria says. Lastly, the timetable. Choosing the date is often one of the most difficult decisions,"

Fundraisers tweak their approach for tough times - USATODAY.com
Fundraisers tweak their approach for tough times - USATODAY.com: "cross the country, fundraisers are intensifying efforts to make solicitations more personal and fruitful.
Such a back-to-basics approach may help many charities navigate through uncertain economic times, says Michael Nilsen, a spokesman for the Association of Fundraising Professionals, which represents more than 30,000 fundraisers.
'That means ensuring that donors who are the most loyal continue to give, because this generates the most revenue with the least cost,' he says."

Tighter budgets: Nonprofits are scaling back their fundraising events | statesmanjournal.com | Statesman Journal: "In trim economic times, the United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley is not the only Mid-Valley nonprofit organization scaling back or adjusting event-planning. The local Red Cross chapter stepped down its black-tie gala to a murder-mystery dinner. Instead of hiring for services, more nonprofit volunteers are adding 'sweat equity,' contributing anything from bartending credentials to photography skills."
